Model Transition Program (MTP)

What is MTP?

MTP is a program in conjunction with Erie 1 BOCES geared for, but not limited to, special education high school students. The program currently runs at Cheektowaga High School and South Park High School. MTP aims to give students knowledge and skills as they transition from high school to higher educational settings or the world of work. Whether or not students choose to continue their education, gain employment after graduation, or are seeking part-time jobs while still in school, the program covers
important subjects, such as job search, job readiness, vocational ethical skills, disability awareness and self-advocacy, successful study habits, introduction to higher education financial planning, and any other current issues.

What do we do?

We cover transitional topics in group form through Job Club and Transition Academy. These classes are taught during the school day. We also meet with students for individual counseling sessions for intake, interest inventory testing, and further vocational counseling based on their individual needs. We also function as liaison between students and local businesses to set up Job Shadows and Job Tours.

Job Shadows are typically one day experiences where a student observes an individual in a potential career field to acquire as much real-life insight into what the job entails. The student can note positive and negative features, skills needed for employment, and time and training needed. Job Shadows may occur during the school day, after school, on weekends or vacations.

Job Tours are typically a half-day excursion to a local business. During a Job Tour, the students learn the inner workings of a facility, how it functions, important aspects of the workplace, different types of vocations at a facility, and anything else that the facility wants to share. Job Tours occur during the school day.

If you are a Cheektowaga or South Park student interested in these services or a Western New York business interested in hosting a Job Shadow or Job Tour, please do not hesitate to contact us.
